COURSE NAME: Satellite Clinical Experience

  1. COURSE DESCRIPTION
    This course is designed to give the students practical experience in the clinical field of dentistry. The students will be able to perform the techniques learned in the classroom and laboratory. The students will be reviewed by both the dental assisting faculty and the affiliated clinical faculty.
  2. COURSE PHILOSOPHY
    This performance course enables the student to become proficient in expanded functions skills. The course is taken after successfully completing EFDA 200, 210, and 212.
  3. COURSE OBJECTIVES
    Upon completion of this course the student will be able to:
    1. Practice as an Expanded Functions Dental Assistant.
    2. Be able to develop his/her own sense of professionalism through continued exposure to professional experiences.
    3. Perform intra- and extra-oral inspections of the oral cavity using accurate charting techniques.
    4. Fabricate study models and custom trays from impressions.
    5. Manipulate and place cements, bases and liners in designated areas into supplied cavity preparations.
    6. Assemble and place matrices and wedges.
    7. Triturate and condense amalgam into various classes of cavity preparations using sufficient condensation pressure.
    8. Fill cavity preparations completely and provide sufficient bulk to facilitate carving of functional anatomy.
    9. Carve a smooth amalgam restoration which restores the functional anatomy of a tooth.
    10. Manipulate and place liners, etchants and bonding agents used in placing restorations.
    11. Select a shade and insert sufficient amount of composite into cavity preparation.
    12. Complete finishing procedures for composite restorations with rotary instruments.
    13. Operate lab engines and handpieces according to instructions.
    14. Fabricate temporary crowns and bridges.
    15. Place rubber dams.
    16. Place sealants.
    17. Place and finish temporary restorations
  4. COURSE REQUIREMENTS:
    1. Active participation is expected.
    2. Students will keep a weekly journal in which they will record clinical experiences. Entries should be made immediately following the day's activities and mailed to the director weekly.
    3. Have a satellite general dentist that will provide restorative clinical experiences and grade clinical competencies.
    4. Students will appear at satellite office in clean professional apparel.
    5. Students will follow standard precaution protocol.
    6. Students will observe OSHA Standards
    7. Each student will be visited by the program director or instructor following classroom training. The program director or instructor will conference with the on site supervisor and student at these visits.
  5. ATTENDANCE POLICY
    Students are required to attend all clinical sessions.


    In the event of illness, he/she must notify both the clinical supervisor and the clinical site immediately.
  6. METHOD OF EVALUATION
    The student's final grade will be contingent on the completion of the required clinical competencies, journal entries and successfully passing the bench test.


    The student will be asked to evaluate the course and practicum experiences.
